Ever wish you could go back in time and change the past? Ever think about how things would have turned out if your team didn’t make that terrible pick with their first rounder? Well, here at Hoops Addict, that is exactly what we’ve done.

We’re going back in time and going through the first round of each NBA Draft starting with 1998. Contributing writer Michael Tiedemann has gone through the picks and taken the following into consideration:

* Who the team already has on their roster. If they needed a center, Tiedemann gave them a center.
* What the player did in their rookie year weighed more heavily than what they did over the span of their career.
* If a player didn’t even play the year he was drafted then they slid down the board.
* The current draft being done will not take into consideration the previous Hoops Addict re-draft. They will be done on the basis that the previous NBA Draft actually took place.
* Some picks will not feature a comment. Something about the 27th pick doesn’t bring a lot to mind in certain cases.

You may not agree with the picks, but that is why we have the comment section. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts and maybe even your version of the draft below.

Today, we tackle the top heavy 2005 NBA Draft.

1st - Milwaukee Bucks

Original Pick: Andrew Bogut, C, Utah
New Pick: Chris Paul, G, Wake Forest

He will be deserving to be an MVP candidate as long as he remains healthy. I wish there was a real way to measure how much better he makes his teammates.

2nd - Atlanta Hawks

Original Pick: Marvin Williams, F, North Carolina
New Pick: Deron Williams, G, Illinois

They passed on their point guard for Marvin Williams, but there is no way they would do it again.

3rd - Utah Jazz

Original Pick: Deron Williams, G, Illinois
New Pick: Danny Granger, F, New Mexico

They desperately needed a point guard, so it hurts not being able to select Williams. But there is just no way to deny that Granger is the next best player in this draft.

4th - New Orleans Hornets

Original Pick: Chris Paul, G, Wake Forest
New Pick: Marvin Williams, F, North Carolina

It’s taken him a few years, but he’s starting to put everything together. Plus, losing out on Paul is just about as cruel as it gets. No player could replace what he’s been able to do.

5th - Charlotte Bobcats

Original Pick: Raymond Felton, G, North Carolina
New Pick: Andrew Bogut, C, Utah

They can finally move Emeka Okafor to his natural position. They have another pick to select the point guard they needed.

6th - Portland Trailblazers

Original Pick: Martell Webster, G, High School
New Pick: Monta Ellis, G, High School

Moped incident aside, Ellis is an explosive scorer. This team needed a lot and Ellis at least gives you points. They had point guard by committee in Portland, but I’d just let Ellis play the two and fire up shots.

7th - Toronto Raptors

Original Pick: Charlie Villanueva, F, UConn
New Pick: Andrew Bynum, C, High School

It creates a lot of size in the frontcourt. I’d love to go point guard here, but they had Calderon just waiting to take over. Not to mention that Mike James played 37 minutes a night. This draft doesn’t have much else. And maybe playing alongside Bosh would have helped Bynum’s progression.

8th - New York Knicks

Original Pick: Channing Frye, F, Arizona
New Pick: Raymond Felton, G, North Carolina

This is/was a franchise that needed to have players that came from a winning tradition. A lot of people have given up on Felton, but I think he can be productive in the right system. I feel bad sending him to New York, but he would have been the smart selection, even if they did have Marbury and Francis.

9th - Golden State Warriors

Original Pick: Ike Diogu, F, Arizona State
New Pick: Charlie Villanueva, F, UConn

This team continued to launch 3-pointers and create matchup problems. Villanueva has the ability to spread the floor at his height. He would have fit in nicely here.

10th - Los Angeles Lakers

Original Pick: Andrew Bynum, C, High School
New Pick: David Lee, F, Florida

Are there more talented players in this draft? Maybe. But I think Lee would be a player Phil Jackson would like to bring in off the bench or play alongside Pau Gasol. Plus, Lee doesn’t care if he gets the ball or not. I’m sure he’d be happy to rebound for Kobe Bryant.

11th - Orlando Magic

Original Pick: Fran Vasquez, F, France
New Pick: Hakim Warrick, F, Syracuse

He’s a human pogo stick that would have been a solid addition to an already formidable second unit.

12th - Los Angeles Clippers

Original Pick: Yaroslav Korolev, F, Russia
New Pick: Nate Robinson, G, Washington

Pure energy off the bench for a team that won 47 games. Wait, the Clippers won 47 games?

13th - Charlotte Bobcats

Original Pick: Sean May, F, North Carolina
New Pick: Jarrett Jack, G, Georgia Tech

He’s put together a solid NBA career. He could at least give them the same, if not close, production Felton’s given them over the years.

14th - Minnesota Timberwolves

Original Pick: Rashad McCants, G, North Carolina
New Pick: Andray Blatche, F, High School

This is because I’m selfish. I’ve wanted Blatche to breakout for a few seasons now. I wish he could have gotten the chance to practice against Garnett and absorb his knowledge of the game.

15th - New Jersey Nets

Original Pick: Antoine Wright, F, Texas A&M
New Pick: Ryan Gomes, F, Providence

Hmm…a productive college basketball player from one of the best conferences in the nation is actually productive in the NBA? Get out of here.

16th - Toronto Raptors

Original Pick: Joey Graham, F, Oklahoma St.
New Pick: Rashad McCants, G, North Carolina

A core of Bosh, Bynum, Calderon, Mo Pete and McCants isn’t exactly going to win any titles, but it’s not exactly half bad, either. McCants isn’t a starter in the league, but you can’t expect to find one at the 16th pick.

17th - Indiana Pacers

Original Pick: Danny Granger, F, New Mexico
New Pick: Jason Maxiell, F, Cincinnati

They needed some beef up front.

18th - Boston Celtics

Original Pick: Gerald Green, F, High School
New Pick: Lou Williams, G, High School

19th - Memphis Grizzlies

Original Pick: Hakim Warrick, F, Syracuse
New Pick: Sean May, F, North Carolina

20th - Denver Nuggets

Original Pick: Julius Hodge, G, North Carolina St.
New Pick: Lou Williams, G, High School

21st - Phoenix Suns

Original Pick: Nate Robinson, G, Washington
New Pick: Martell Webster, G, High School

22nd - Denver Nuggets

Original Pick: Jarrett Jack, G, Georgia Tech
New Pick: Luther Head, G, Illinois

23rd - Sacramento Kings

Original Pick: Francisco Garcia, G, Louisville
New Pick: Same

24th - Houston Rockets

Original Pick: Luther Head, G, Illinois
New Pick: Francisco Garcia, G, Louisville

25th - Seattle Supersonics

Original Pick: Johan Petro, C, France
New Pick: Ronny Turiaf, F, Gonzaga

26th - Detroit Pistons

Original Pick: Jason Maxiell, F, Cincinnati
New Pick: Channing Frye, C, Arizona

27th - Portland Trailblazers

Original Pick: Linas Kleiza, F, Missouri
New Pick: Brandon Bass, F, LSU

28th - San Antonio Spurs

Original Pick: Ian Mahinmi, C, France
New Pick: Linas Kleiza, F, Missouri

29th - Miami Heat

Original Pick: Wayne Simien, F, Kansas
New Pick: Ike Diogu, F, Arizona St.

30th - New York Knicks

Original Pick: David Lee, F, Florida
New Pick: Fabricio Oberto, F, Argentina

Nice work..although there’s no way in the world Hakim would picked that high. He’s insanely inconsistent.
