Using Basketball To Find Peace In Ireland

April 12, 2009

I have a confession to make: sometimes I lose sight of what is happening around the world.

It pains me to admit that I live a sheltered life in which I rarely worry about what’s happening outside of Ontario or even my own community at times.

Despite living in my own little bubble, a couple years back something that caught my attention was the amazing work that Sean Tuohey and Dave Cullen were doing with Peace Players International to help children overcome the political and social and social prejudices that were being passed down from families for generation after generation. It’s some truly remarkable and life changing work that you need to investigate further by clicking on the link above.

I was tipped off about Peace Players International from Henry Abbott and I did a quick post on Hoops Addict at the time to help spread the word about this organization. I have to admit I had almost forgotten about this organization until a couple weeks back when Dave Cullen got in touch with me due to a desire to talk about the new program he’s running called Full Court Peace.

Needless to say I jumped at the opportunity and recently I was able to chat with Dave about:

* What he’s doing in Ireland to unite kids through basketball
* Why he feels inclined to give so much of his time
* His work with Peace Players International and how he met Sean Tuohey
* What it meant to him personally and professionally to be recognized by ESPN (he was given the Arthur Ashe courage award at 2007 ESPY’s)
* He explained his new organization called Full Court Peace
* Dave gives basketball fans the scoop on the current political and social turmoil occurring in Ireland
* He finished the interview by telling listeners how can they help out with this movement

I rarely hype up interviews on Hoops Addict, but if you only listen to one interview I post this year this is the one you should check out.
