Turnovers Prove Costly For Cavs
It was a tale of 25 turnovers and unsustained energy that cost the Cavaliers a home defeat to the Golden State Warriors, 105-95, after a long, seven-game road trip. The loss dropped their record to 6-7 for the season.
Returning to Quicken Loans Arena after defeating the Charlotte Bobcats 102-94 on Monday, the Cavs had to learn the hard way that giving up an unnecessary amount of possessions to their opponents will impede them from having any chance to win a game.
“No excuses – we were terrible on the offensive end as far as turning the ball over,” Cavs head coach Byron Scott told the media after the loss. “We’re just throwing [the ball] around as if it’s not important; that round ball is important.”
Going in the locker room at half-time, the Cavs trailed a mere 55-50 after cutting down a 12-point deficit with just two minutes left in the half. Big man Semih Erden (14 points) displayed his best performance of the year as his 10 points in the half is what kept the Cavs in the game.
Despite the Cavs’ seven turnovers and allowing Warrior Klay Thompson (14 points) to score eight points alone in the third quarter, they were able to keep the score close with the effort of Antawn Jamison (19 points, five rebounds) who posted 12 points in the quarter. Golden State led Cleveland 81-79 in the final period.
Seven Cleveland turnovers and a 20-8 run by Golden State to close the game left the Cavs looking exhausted and without energy; especially Kyrie Irving. Although he was productive overall (18 points, eight rebounds and five assists), he was tired and allowed his energy to dip in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over six times total by the end of the game.
“It was carelessness and laziness,” Irving said. “We have a lot to prove on a back-to-back, and we didn’t do that tonight.”
He continued: “We know what we have to do…it’s on to the next game.”
The Cavaliers will host the Chicago Bulls on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
