Over the past few weeks a lot of things have changed with the Toronto Raptors since Sam Mitchell was fired. One thing that hasn’t are the pregame workouts Chris Bosh and Jay Triano have enjoyed since Bosh came into the NBA.
While having an assistant coach work with a player isn’t out of the norm – in fact, it’s what Triano and Bosh have been doing since he entered the league – it does seem unique for a head coach to be seen less than 30 minutes before opening tip on the court working up a sweat with the teams star player. Over the past year that I’ve covered the NBA in Toronto I’ve yet to see another head coach get on the sweats and workout with players prior to a game.
When asked if working out with Bosh prior to games was unique, Triano quickly brushed this topic off.
“I don’t think so,” Triano admitted while walking back to the Raptors locker room after one of these workouts prior to a game against New Jersey. “Scott Skiles was out in Milwaukee and I’ve seen other coaches out on the floor. Sometimes it’s just to deliver a message. With Chris (Bosh), it’s just a thing we’ve done his whole career.”
So, it’s a comfort thing?
“Yes, it’s just something we feel comfortable with. I’ve got to shower anyway (before games), so I may as well get sweaty before I jump in there.”
If you head to the Air Canada Centre early to watch pre-game warmups don’t be surprised to see the head coach out on the floor. While this is the first time I’ve noticed this, the Raptors new head coach is more than willing to go the extra mile to keep his franchise player happy.
