When the NBA released its official 2008-09 season schedule earlier this week, hoops aficionados flocked to their respective teams’ websites to gauge and plan when and where they need to be over the course of the six month period from November to April. For Pistons fans, this was no different.

Without further adieu, all you need to know about the forthcoming 51st season in Pistons franchise history.

October 29 vs. IND: In front of a home crowd, rookie coach and ex-Piston small forward Michael Curry will make his debut as head bench boss. The game will also mark the first appearances of recently-acquired big man Kwame Brown and potentially even UAB rookie Walter Sharpe.

November 1 vs. WAS : Is it too soon in the season to have a grudge match? In this early season tilt, constantly ridiculed Kwame Brown makes his return to the city that chose him first overall in the 2001 NBA Draft. Wizards fans (and Lakers fans… and Grizzlies fans) may not have much reason to be excited about Brown, but since his arrival in Detroit, the man has done and said all the right things about his future in a new city. Be excited.

November 9 vs. BOS: Hate, hate, hate. So much.

December 5 vs. PHI: For nearly half a decade the Philadelphia 76ers have not been a particularly serious threat to the Eastern Conference’s upper echelon, but with the summer signing of Elton Brand, that may very well change. Though some consider the Sixers amongst the best in the conference already, you can bet Brand and company will be looking to prove it as early and often as they can. One of their first tests? This match up with Eastern Conference model of consistency, Detroit.

December 23 vs. CHI: The day before Christmas Eve, Joe Dumars’ Pistons will host the longtime rival Chicago Bulls along with their most recent gift from the basketball Gods: Derrick Rose. The jury is still out on just how much of an impact the rookie can have on last season’s disappointing Bulls squad, but this should be as good of an opportunity as any to see where they stand.

January 16 @ OKC: The Pistons found themselves competing in Oklahoma several years ago when the New Orleans Hornets sought refuge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but in this midseason match up, the squad will get their first official taste of the league’s newest locale.

February 4 vs. MIA: Though whatever the flip happened to the Miami Heat last season remains a mystery, after a summer’s worth of resting, healing and rejuvenation, expect Dwyane Wade and company to bounce back this season. Just how high that bounce takes them is up for question With Marion enjoying his first full season in Florida and the addition of rookie Michael Beasley, don’t rule out Miami as a legitimate contender just because of the disappointment of last season.

March 1 @ BOS: Not only is this a battle against Those Who Shall Not Be Mentioned, it is also the last game of a season-high five-game road trip. Matched up against last year’s champion at the tail end of a long week and at an often arduous time in the season, expect this match up to be a true indicator of team character.

April 5 vs. CHA: Jostling for playoff position in the final few weeks of the regular season can be a difficult task, in this late-season match up with the Charlotte Bobcats, the Pistons will find themselves squaring off against former coach Larry Brown… and this time he doesn’t have to be in charge of the New York Knicks.
