When the name Jalen Rose is mentioned to a basketball fan, there are very distinct images and on-the-court moments that come to mind. Michigan fans of Rose immediately think back to his Fab 5 days at the University of Michigan, where he was the skinny kid with large shorts and a larger game to match. Indianapolis fans remember him as the versatile guard for the Indiana Pacers who gave Michael Jordan fits in the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals. Some Toronto residents hear Rose’s name, and they remember that he was one of the many players who could not stop Kobe’s 81 point barrage.
But despite his retirement from the game of basketball in 2007, Rose has been determined to make his mark off the court in various arenas. He is an NBA analyst for ESPN who is not afraid to speak his mind; he will be a guest speaker/celebrity poker player at the Blogs with Balls conference at the Blog World Expo October 15-16th; he has a large presence on the web with both his website and his twitter page; and finally, he also has dedicated part of his post-NBA life to helping children, as evidenced by his recent nomination for the 2010 Jefferson Award, which honors outstanding public service by athletes.
I recently sat down with Rose for an entertaining 30 minute conversation. In it, we discussed the importance of the social media, the responsibility of athletes, how he thinks the Washington Wizards will do during the 2009-2010 season, how he knew it was time to retire, and a host of other interesting topics.
