Lakers Sign Ebanks And Caracter

August 15, 2010

It’s been said before, but now it’s all but set in stone: The Los Angeles Lakers are officially done adding players in the 2010 offseason. The final pieces of the Lakers roster that will try to compete for a three-peat were added on Thursday when the Lakers signed second-round draft picks, Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter.

Ebanks was signed to a non-guaranteed deal for the rookie minimum worth about $473,000 if he makes the team. The former West Virginia standout was selected 43rd overall by the defending NBA Champions after averaging 11.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists with the Mountaineers. While playing for the Lakers’ Las Vegas summer league team, Ebanks averaged 15 points per game. According to Ebanks, he will be wearing Trevor Ariza’s old No. 3.

Caracter was signed to a deal for the rookie minimum in 2010-11 and a team option in place for 2011-12 worth approximately $788,000. Standing 6’9 with a long wingspan, the former UTEP (by way of Louisville) player averaged 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in his only season with the team. He will look to add some depth to a big man group consisting of Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom.

The signing of the Lakers’ two young draft picks caps off an offseason that saw Phil Jackson, Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown resigned without breaking the team’s bank. On top of retaining those key contributors off last year’s group, the defending champions also brought in veteran free agents Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff.

The Lakers will have 14 players on their roster for 2010-11, one more than they had last season.
