Josh Smith Lends A Helping Hand

March 19, 2010

Can you guess which Atlanta Hawk has led the team in assists in eight of their past 11 games?

Mike Bibby? Nope.

Joe Johnson? No, he’s missed their past two games due to tendinitis in his knee.

Jamal Crawford? Not even close – he’s their scoring spark off the bench.

It’s none other than Josh Smith, a player who came into the league perceived as being just a high-flyer.

This season Smith has taken his game to new heights and is currently the only player in the NBA averaging at least 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

“Josh has been unbelieveable,” his head coach, Mike Woodson, gushed to Hoops Addict earlier this week. “I knew Josh six years ago and where he is today it’s beautiful to watch, man. To sit on the sidelines to watch the maturity of a player and how he has grown in every facet of the game. We’re talking about dribbling the ball, passing, shooting, blocking shots, getting on the boards, finding loose balls, drawing charges. He does everything for our ball club. We wouldn’t be in the position we are in today if it wasn’t for Smooth and his development.”

Pretty good praise from a coach about a player he butted heads with.

And, it’s a pretty good reflection of how much Smith has grown on and off the court over the past few seasons.
