Jack Wills Toronto To Victory
With Chris Bosh sitting out his second consecutive game, starting point guard Jarrett Jack filled in admirably with a game-high 23 points.
The best part was of his scoring outburst was the fact 11 of his game-high 23 points came in the fourth quarter then Toronto needed a late rally to secure the win. Facing a double-digit lead midway through the fourth, Jack put Toronto on his back and willed his team to victory by sacrificing his body in order to get to the free throw line.
“Jarrett carried us,” Wright told the media when asked about Jack’s play in the fourth quarter. “He went over to coach and he said he wanted the ball and then he made good things happen. It’s one thing to request the ball but it’s another thing to actually make things happen. He was aggressive on the pick and roll and he got the basket, got fouled and we needed that.”
So, what exactly was it that allowed Jack to erupt for 11 points? Turns out the veteran floor general took advantage of Washington’s inability to react to some pick-and-rolls Toronto threw at them.
“We had them a little bit extended with the type of shooters we had in the game,” Jack explained to the media after the game. “Then in their pick-and-roll coverage they kept going underneath the screen which gave me some space to either put up a shot or get to the basket. I just tried to take what the defense gave me.”
Jack’s 11 points didn’t come easy. Far from it, actually. Instead of settling for jumpers he continued to punish Washington’s defense – and his body – by rolling hard to the bucket whenever he had the ball in his hands.
All that while he nearly equaled Washington’s combined output as a team (16 points in the fourth quarter).
When asked to talk more about his strong play in the fourth quarter the humble point guard shrugged off the compliment and chalked it up to doing what the team needed to secure a win.
Not shocking since this kind of humble attitude has been prevalent all season while talking with him.
“I think we just know how desperately we need wins going down the stretch and making a final push to end the season,” a humble Jack told the media. “Especially games at home. They are crucial and vital to how we’re going to end up in the standings. We can’t let these opportunities slip through our fingers.”
Even if Jack brushed off his fourth quarter heroics after the game it’s clear this was a win that would have slipped through the Raptors claws if he hadn’t of stepped up.
Besides, who cares if Jack wasn’t willing to boast to the media after the game after his play did all the talking that was needed in the fourth quarter.
