Professional athletes from Chad Ochocinco to Stephon Marbury to Shaquille O’Neal have been in the news recently for using the media to get their respective points across.

Not to be outdone, Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood has decided to do the same in a more traditional medium.

On August 7th, from 7-10 p.m., Haywood will make his sports talk radio debut on the Washington Wizards flagship station 106.7 FM “The Fan”.  He will be co-hosting the show with D.C. area sports personality Lou Holder.

Haywood made it clear that this is not just a publicity stunt.

“I am very interested in pursuing a career in the media after my basketball career is over,”  Haywood said via the Wizards PR staff.  “I’ve gained some experience in other forms of media and radio is the last avenue I need to bolster my resume.  I am going to have fun on the show and I hope the fans will enjoy it as well.”

Haywood, who was a communications major at the University of North Carolina,  first gained experience with the media in 2003, when he served as a color commentator for the Washington Mystics, and he continued that role in 2004, 2005 and 2008.

Last year, when he missed 76 games rehabbing his wrist, Haywood served a studio analyst for select Wizards games on Comcast SportsNet.

Haywood also writes a popular blog over at Yardbarker.com, where he’s recently covered topics including Antoine Walker’s arrest, Michael Jackson’s passing and the odd antics of Marbury.

Haywood will resume his more familiar role as the starting center when he and the rest of his Wizards’ teammates start training camp on October 6th on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.
