College Basketball Power Rankings: 12/1/08

December 1, 2008

This may be the hardest power rankings to do all year, as we still don’t know much about these teams, and with so many good match-ups over the past week, it’s hard to differentiate a good loss from a bad one. Here is Hoops Addict’s newest version of the College Basketball Power Rankings:

1. North Carolina (7-0, 0-0): Not only did the Tar Heels win the Maui Invitational, but they beat a good Oregon team and made a top 10 match-up with Notre Dame look like amateur hour. It’s cliché, but right now the only team that can beat North Carolina is itself.

2. Connecticut (6-0, 0-0): Lost in all of the Thanksgiving weekend games was UConn beating two good teams- Miami (FL) and Wisconsin- in the Paradise Jam. All the talk on this team surrounds Hasheem Thabeet and A.J. Price, but don’t sleep on Jerome Dyson, currently the teams leading scorer.

3. Pittsburgh (7-0, 0-0): The Panthers make a big jump after beating Texas Tech and Washington State this weekend. While their style of play never overwhelms, Pittsburgh continues to win games- lots of them.

4. Gonzaga (5-0, 0-0): Another team quickly on the rise is Gonzaga, who beat Oklahoma State, Maryland and Tennessee this weekend to win the Old Spice Classic. The Zags currently have five players averaging double figures, and that doesn’t even include Jeremy Pargo (9.6 ppg), their best player.

5. Duke (7-0, 0-0): While the rest of college basketball’s powers were beating up on each other, Duke played Montana and Duquesne over the holiday. Traveling to Purdue on Tuesday night will be their first major test.

6. Notre Dame (5-1, 0-0): Can’t fault the Irish for losing to North Carolina, but they now must learn to play without Luke Harangody, who is expected to miss some time because of pneumonia. With Kyle McAlarney averaging over 35 points in their last two games, Notre Dame should be just fine.

7. Oklahoma (6-0, 0-0): Welcome to the top 10 Oklahoma, who beat Davidson, UAB and Purdue (likely three NCAA Tournament teams) on the way to the NIT Tip-Off Classic championship. Blake Griffin is averaging 25 points and 19 rebounds per game. Yikes!

8. Texas (5-1, 0-0): The Longhorns lost one of the best games of the year in the Maui Invitational, an 81-80 thriller to Notre Dame. Although this team is getting contributions across the board, they still haven’t found a suitable replacement for D.J. Augustin at point guard.

9. Purdue (5-1, 0-0): Purdue had no answer for Blake Griffin in the NIT Tip-Off Classic- but there’s no shame in that, few teams will all season. They must rebound quickly, as Duke comes to West Lafayette on Tuesday.

10. Louisville (5-1, 0-0): We know that Western Kentucky was a Sweet 16 team last March, but there is still no excuse for the Cardinals losing to them on Sunday. While Louisville won’t shoot 27 percent every game, it could be a cause for concern.

11. Tennessee (5-1, 0-0): Despite Sunday night’s loss to Gonzaga, it’s hard to drop the Volunteers too far after they defeated Wichita State and Georgetown in the Old Spice Classic. Give coach Bruce Pearl credit- for all the new players he is incorporating this season, the Volunteers have been better than expected.

12. Michigan State (4-1, 0-0): With all the good teams in the Old Spice Classic, there was no way that everyone could go home undefeated. But after a loss to Maryland, and an eight point win over Wichita State, Spartans fans should be concerned- especially with North Carolina coming to town this week.

13. Syracuse (6-0, 0-0): How do you go from being unranked all the way to no. 13? Easy, just beat Florida, Kansas (in Kansas City) and Virginia in one week. This is the best team in the Big East that no one is talking about.

14. Miami (FL) (4-1, 0-0): It’s hard to fault the Canes too much for losing to UConn in the Paradise Jam, especially after they came back and dominated San Diego the next day. With Ohio State and Kentucky in the coming week, Miami can show us a lot.

15. Xavier (6-0, 0-0): A quiet week for the Musketeers, as they played once, winning impressively against Miami (OH). Let’s see what they do December 13th against Cincinnati (5-1), before we make much more of a fuss about Xavier.

16. Wake Forest (6-0, 0-0): The Demon Deacons won the 76 Classic in Anaheim Sunday night, but their only real impressive victory in the tournament was against Baylor in the final. Still, this is a young team that is only going to get better as the season goes on.

17. Davidson (5-1, 0-0): Loyola-Maryland did college basketball a huge disservice by double teaming Stephen Curry, limiting him to three shots in their game last Monday. Give Curry credit for responding the way he did- not forcing anything, while letting his teammates do the work in a 30 point win.

18. Wisconsin (5-1, 0-0): Wisconsin hung tough, but simply didn’t have the athletes to stay with UConn in the Paradise Jam final. Virginia Tech and Marquette are on the Badgers schedule this week, so things won’t get any easier.

19. Villanova (6-0, 0-0): Another year, another strong group of guards at Villanova. The Wildcats haven’t played anyone too tough yet, but you can’t criticize a team for beating everyone on their schedule.

20. Georgetown (5-1, 0-0): Another victim of the gauntlet that was the Old Spice Classic. The Hoyas played Tennessee awfully tough in defeat, and rebounded with a nice win over local rival Maryland.

  • North Carolina is a good team, but it will not be a cake walk for them this year. When they beat Notre Dame Harongody was sick and he just didn’t play well. Although I think North Carolina should win the ACC, they will not go unscathed. I think on the road at Duke, Clemson and Florida State will be trouble for them this year. Roy Wiliams’ teams has a history of choking. Lets see if they win it all this year.

North Carolina isn’t a good team, they are already a great team.

That being said I don’t think they finish the year undefeated. They have road trips to Miami, Virginia Tech, Maryland (where they lost last year) and Duke.

And I’m glad you mentioned Florida State as well. Don’t sleep on the Seminoles. I know they lost last night at Northwestern (not exactly the ’96 Bulls), but this is a young team that will get better as the year goes on, and visitors always have a tough time going to Tallahassee (the Seminoles beat Miami and Clemson- both NCAA Tournmanent teams- at home last year).

As for nationally, anything can happen in a one game situation, but the only teams that I think have the size, athleticism, experience and coaching are UConn and maybe Louisville. I think if Notre Dame played them again with a healthier Harangody they might be able to pull a surprise as well.

No this team is not unbeatable, but defintely the best in college basketball.
