Floor Burn Tournament: Finals
September 1, 2008
And then there were two.
After a month long battle to crown the Floor Burn Champion, the final contestants are Jason Maxiell and Shane Battier. Despite complaints from some readers about these players being heralded on message board across the ‘net, I have no qualms with these two finalists because they are a great representation of what the Floor Burn Tournament represents: two players who don’t get the shine they deserve for being glue guys and integral parts of their respective teams success.
Voting starts today and will end Saturday at 12 am. Make sure you vote early so you don’t lose your chance to have your voice heard.

Well it’s 118 to 7 for Maxiell now. Does Battier want to throw in the towel already?

I don’t think I’ve seen a picture of my boy J-Max yet. Last time, it was Lee and we kicked his behind. Why don’t they show the champ? We already know who it is.

Well, it’s time for ‘The Putback King’ to take his rightful place in the last slot of this tournament. It’s been a nice run, but let’s give J-Max his shine.

Pistons blog or not, NBA fans know who the Crown belongs to. Maxiell had this one before it began, just ask the many that have come in his way….remember Tyson Chandler? I know he does but I’m sure he would love to forget.

Pistons fans need to get a life…
everyone knows Shane > Maxiell.
September 2, 2008 » 9:43 AM »
Give it to Pistons fans for showing up in the masses. They have clearly beat us Rockets fans. But the fact is that this is just a popularity contest. Any NBA GM or Coach would take a Battier over JMax in a heart beat. Battier is known for his defensive prowess, his constant diving after lose balls, and his other world hustle. JMax has some nasty put backs. Nonetheless, you Piston fans beat the rest of the basketball fan world.

If by “everyone knows” you mean “no one believes,” then yes “everyone knows” Shane Battier is better than Maxiell

Resorting to name calling will do nothing for your fight Grunge Dave.
September 2, 2008 » 1:41 PM »
Each player had a paragraph written about them in the beginning of this tournament and most of the paragraph authors were fan bloggers of the players team. It was expected in my mind that the bloggers supporting their player would promote the tournament and specifically their player in their blog. That is what has happened and I really don’t see how that can be unfair. Just like Maxiell, Battier has a blog on his side. So I really don’t see what the issue is here.
September 2, 2008 » 2:17 PM »
It looks like Shane is delivering a baby, which Maxiell will undoubtedly eat.

September 2, 2008 » 2:48 PM »
name calling?
if Maxiell played for anyone but the Pistons he would not be in the final two. I think you can admit to that. Battier would be a contestant even if he played for the Miami Heat.
September 2, 2008 » 2:50 PM »
Jason Maxiell is da man…can’t no one on this mess with him!!! and all the haters out there, i can’t wait til he dunks on all of your favorite teams…and he will dunk on all 5 players out there!!!
September 2, 2008 » 4:02 PM »
Grungedave is battier… I mean bitter… about his boy gettin’ trounced by Max. Don’t worry, friend, you’re not alone. Max has been a nightmare for a lot of other teams over the past few years, and that’s not gonna stop!

yeah. at the end of the day shane is a better defender. max can guard kobe…
September 2, 2008 » 5:56 PM »
whats the point of having a poll if a huge single group is going to propel their guy to win it..it proves nothing and no real opinion other than the fact that Pistons forums spam people to vote
September 2, 2008 » 6:14 PM »
Hey, I recognize Maxiell is going to win this thing
(it’s why I tried a tactic of voting against him for the past 2-3 weeks!)…
I nevertheless maintain that Battier is the true Floor Burn champ!
Go Rockets!
September 2, 2008 » 6:32 PM »
GRUNGEDAVE!!! Don’t give in to them, I thought better of you.
Giving up so easily.
We have the power of millions of Chinese on our side. We just have to get them involved.
Battier is the poster boy for this contest. If he doesn’t win it’s because Pistons fans found a way to cheat.
Maybe we can tag something on to the end of that Peak commercial they keep playing over and over again on Chinese Television…
I bet Hoops Addict would love to get those hits!!

Yeeeeeah, that’s not dillusional.
Battier and Maxiell are different kinds of player. Battier is a better on ball defender, but Maxiell is a better help side defender. You could go back and forth between who’s better at what, but the issue here is who fans think is the better hustle player.
I’m happy for Maxiell, but Rodman would crush any of these candidates.
September 2, 2008 » 8:37 PM »
Shane is a better all around defender in terms of hustle, drawing charges, being glued to the guy.
Shane will win eventually, he deserves it.
September 2, 2008 » 9:50 PM »
The Pistons fans know they are screwed right. Once the Houston fans come in and the Chinese fans come in. Prediction Max-1285,Battier-3672
September 2, 2008 » 10:05 PM »
I didn’t realize you can get floor burns from dunks and blocks. I thought floor burns were from diving on the floor to make hustle plays. If this were truly a “Floor Burn Tournament” and not a popularity contest, Battier would have already won. Don’t get me wrong, Maxiell is great at what he does, but when it comes to chasing loose balls, making hustle plays, and being a team’s glue guy, Battier is the man.
September 2, 2008 » 10:08 PM »
WOW Battier is clearly more deserving. The best perimeter defender in the league and gives it 110%

Battier is wayyyy better than Max….the only reason max his the lead (temporarily) is cuz he is on more highlight reel dunks on ESPN…so basically its a popularity contest. But F that, Battier is going to win this easilyy…no doubt…im goin to sleep ez tonight
September 2, 2008 » 11:13 PM »
Hey Pistons’ fans, it is downright embarrassing Shane is getting so many votes at a Pistons’ site.
By the way, Shane >>> JM and they shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence.
Op better closes the vote early before Sat to declare Max a winner; otherwise this blog would be invaded by the Rockets and the China’s red army. How do you feel for a final vote of 2,000(JM) to 10,000,000,000(SB)?

Yet that post right below Hayesfan is, apparently, perfectly fine…
Huh? Are these mods Pistons fans or something?
September 3, 2008 » 12:45 PM »
Nice irrelevant arguments, Matt. It’s a FLOOR BURN Tournament, in case you hadn’t noticed. It’s about hustle and sacrificing your body, not about put back dunks and denials. Oh, and I’m pretty sure that getting out of the first round has nothing to do with it, especially when neither Battier nor Maxiell is a star of their team. Swap them and suddenly Battier is perennially in the conference finals and Maxiell is one and done. It really has nothing to do with them as individuals.
September 3, 2008 » 1:16 PM »
Wow, why so angry Matt? Is it cause you guys got beat by Lebron James and the scrub squad? Is it cause you keep bringing back the same old team year after year (and this year again) and realize your time has passed? You keep runnin your mouth and we’ll unleash Artest on your fans again. By the way Wackxiel is down 20%. Eat it.
September 3, 2008 » 1:28 PM »
Maxiell has only been in the league for 3 seasons and barely played the first two (especially year one where he averaged a mere 6 mpg). Battier has been doing his thing for 7 seasons while getting significant minutes from day one. It’s not that Maxiell isn’t a tough player, it’s just that he doesn’t have enough tenure to be in the finals with a veteran floor burner like Shane Battier.
What is the definition of “floor burn” anyway? Most of the arguments that tout Maxiell refer to dunks and blocks. If we are talking about dunking and blocking shots, neither of these guys would be in the final. You would see LeBron James vs. Marcus Camby in that case.
When it comes to taking charges, hitting the floor for loose balls and doing all the other dirty work, it’s hard to see how Maxiell’s name can even be mentioned in the same breath as Battier’s. I can see how Maxiell’s amazing blocks and thunderous dunks would make highlight reels. I just can’t see how they qualify him as a floor burner.
September 3, 2008 » 1:29 PM »
Tayshaun owns battier
September 3, 2008 » 1:30 PM »
Come on now we all know “both teams played hard” errrr…..”both players play hard”. Battier will probably never will the MVP and neither will Maxiell. But every championship team needs a player in the mold of a Battier or Maxiell. Someone to pick up the garbage. Battier just flat out gets the job done while Maxiell has bad intentions everytime he has the ball. Personally I love the fire that Maxiell plays with. The intensity that he has when he grabs a rebound, only to obliterate the basket by slamming the ball through it, is just fun to watch. So in the end who would you rather see on your team…a consistent “floor burner”, or someone who consistently eats babies and takes names?
Vote Mad Max for floor burner president ’08.
September 3, 2008 » 2:07 PM »
Ooooh that would have been a hard choice. Tayshaun or Battier.
Glad I didn’t have to make it.
September 3, 2008 » 2:19 PM »
you cant deny that maxiell is a good defender he put some good D on Dwight Howard in the playoffs and he blocks a lot of shots he’s 6’6 Battier dosen’t have nearly the defensive post presence but he is better at guarding the guards. He sure as hell never dunks like maxiell though
September 3, 2008 » 3:30 PM »

lol, Battier a better player then Maxiell?
Max is a beast, he’s one of the best shot blockers in the league, his offense is growing every day, and he is a much better player over-all.
Better offensively, better interior defender.. and over all a talented NBA player.
If Battier didn’t give 110% every game, he wouldn’t be in the league. He has no talent.

September 3, 2008 » 8:36 PM »
Chuck Hayes should be ranked higher than Jason Maxiell. Maxiell is a pretty good player and a Pistons fan favorite, but I would bet that most NBA coaches would rank Chuck Hayes over Maxiell. Battier is leaps and bounds higher than any of the others… including Senor Dirty himself (Bruce Bowen, SAS — which makes me wonder what a fight between Harpring and Bowen would be like….?).
September 3, 2008 » 9:05 PM »
Looks like we got some sour Pistons fans over here. I would love to see your Pistons in the finals. We’ll bring Ron Artest back to the Palace. The next time he’ll be on the scorer’s table is with the Larry O’Brien trophy in hand.

September 3, 2008 » 10:51 PM »
And it’s Battier by a nose…err…one thousand votes…
September 3, 2008 » 11:02 PM »
Ben,
First of all, that proxy thing doesn’t actually work. It seemed like it did, initially, but it actually just hangs on the “Loading” page forever after you click ‘Vote’. I ended up having a bunch of browsers open that weren’t actually doing anything. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and try yourself. Those internet resources are available to Rockets and Pistons fans, alike.
Secondly, where does it say you can’t use a proxy? If you can vote from multiple computers in your house, which is essentially voting from multiple IP addresses, what would be the difference? Nobody would be breaking any rules.
And, again, it doesn’t work in the first place.
The truth is you, and Maxiell, are simply losing to the combination of Rockets/Battier supporters from ClutchFans and many others across the globe.
By the way, here is a quote taken directly from PistonsForum.com:
“Right, man. I have 2 PCs for internet and I voted from both…So everyone can vote practically unlimited times, only different IPs are needed.” -raxrets
Since nobody has unlimited computers, we all know what raxrets is implying with that statement.
Regardless, good luck to Pistons fans and their 3rd year player who barely saw any floor to burn his first two seasons.
September 3, 2008 » 11:32 PM »
whatever it takes to win i suppose..
September 3, 2008 » 11:38 PM »
Ben,
If there is a way to cheat, as you think you have proven, why aren’t there thousands of more votes? Oh, I know… because you can’t. Go ahead and try.
If one person could vote endlessly from one computer, don’t you think the vote count for both finalists would be much higher after a few days? Obviously, you can’t and you are looking for excuses to use when Maxiell ultimately loses to the true Floor Burn champion.
September 3, 2008 » 11:41 PM »
at least detroit can get past the 1st round..
September 3, 2008 » 11:41 PM »
Don’t mess with the Chinese eh?
As far as heart of a champion… yeah the Rockets won in the previous millenium a couple times, but Battier was in high school, so that really doesn’t count.
And I’m sure you’d love to see us in the finals. Because that would mean that you finally won a playoff series. Hustle all you want Rockets, on the floor, down the tunnel, and right to your couches to watch the rest of the playoffs.
I will give you props for winning though. You had more fans turn out. I’m sure that the next time our teams play the announcers will be all over it, what a great moral victory it was, and how it’ll keep you warm at home during the second round…
September 4, 2008 » 12:06 AM »

September 4, 2008 » 12:48 AM »
You are right Brooksball, who are we to kid about Battier not deserving of Floor Burn Champion. He is Mr. Intangible good luck to yall and hopefull we can at least gain some chinese fans for our club.
September 4, 2008 » 1:22 AM »
Azzkicker,
“Translated, this means: “Why isn’t MY guy winning?””
No. Battier might even have the edge in a fair contest and that’s fine with me. I have my opinion like everybody and respect others’. But this misterious turnaround is just ridiculous. Just by playing for a specific team (i.e. having a specific teammate) should not decide. I bet there are a bunch of people who know nothing about the other player.
“Hate to burst your bubble, but polls work based on the number of votes received. So it’s actually pretty simple…”
Correct. Not based on the number of people voting. I could also start to vote 1000 times but that would spoil the whole thing and after all, it would change nothing. Both Jason and Shane will be the same afterwards and favourites of their fans.
“MORE people think Battier is better.”
Might also be true, but how come it wasn’t so in the beginning?
It’s a game, not a war. Nobody will have bigger thingies if their man wins.

Um, maybe because alot of people didn’t know about it? Ever thought about that?

Maxxx, you had a long long excuse there buddy.
You say how did we have such a comeback? My question is how did you have such a huge lead.
Your a moron also if it didn’t occur to you because of your time zone in Detroit that you guys got to it before us. We were still sleeping when your votes started tallying up.
But when Tx woke up so did this poll.

Lol at Rocket fans going from First Round Loosers to Floor Burn Tournament Winners and make it look like their really going to get something for it!
September 4, 2008 » 8:35 AM »
Oh come on yall! Can’t we all just get along.
Let’s talk about how we both defeated our true nemesis in the Lakers and Boston and hope that we meet one another in the finals (my dream for June of 09! Rockets vs Pistons ftw!)
Battier made a huge comeback because until we posted it on all the Rockets forums no one knew the vote was now.
I am sure there are people who have voted multiple times for Max too.
The Pistons are my second fave team and in fact I have a friend who owns season tickets, so I can definitely appreciate Max. But, Shane is the definition of this tournament. Even all Rockets fans don’t appreciate him and what he brings to the game like they should.
Every single trade scenario over the summer before we traded for Artest included someone trying to give away Shane or my boy Chuck.
It’s also entirely possible that as the different blogs around picked up the finals voting that other basketball fans are voting for Battier as well.
Let’s not let this comment section turn into a flame fest eh? It’s been a lot of fun following this tournament.

Yup is Time to let the season begin and beat LA an Boston better known as David Stern’s Wives!

at least detroit can get past the 1st round..
lets see the poor pisstons lose their best athlete and see if they even make it to the first round, better yet win what, ten or twelve games in a row after he goes out. detroits gettin older and doing nothing about it, rockets have 3 legitimiate superstars and plenty of young guys to build the team with. But anyways, 2009 will be a whole new season, new start, so lets watch the pistons digress into mediocrityand the rockets do the opposite.

Is it really that hard to figure out why there was huge turnaround in votes? I’ll explain it real quick using a timeline of events.
1st – Voting starts
2nd – Pistons fans find out about it
3rd – Pistons fans see that they have a huge lead and start gloating
4th – Rockets fan sees that poll actually exists and how badly Battier is getting outvoted and dissesd
5th – Rockets fan posts a link to the poll on the biggest Rockets fan site on the internet
6th – Game over

lets go shane! i commend all the rockets fans. do work!i love the rockets

I wonder if you piston fans really understand what your saying?
If you look at the polls for the other rounds , such as round 3, we have 4000 people voting in the Maxiel poll but only 2000 people voting in the battier poll. This poll has only 200 more votes, and you guys are claiming they are coming from CHINA? We can put that to this being the FINALS of the tourney
People in china really have time to learn english, navitage to this page and vote for a teammate of thier favourite player?
I voted in other rounds before, but not everyone has the time to wait for the poll to open up, i got my updates on this from thedreamshake (props!) and they posted on it when shane was down, and others say cluchfans had it too. Maybe thats why there was this come from behind?
Either way, battier should win this, cause he loves that floor, and this comp was made for shane!

game over

Yeah, total thanks to ClutchFans. My appeal for the “sympathy vote” seems to have helped! Go Battier!

its just cuz Detroit is on Eastern time zone… thats why Houston was an hr late to the party!

I think it is funny how defensive Rocket fans are getting when us Piston fans make fun of you for not getting out of the first round. Maybe it is because you know you have a really good team, you are just stuck in the middle of a bloated Western Confrence. I gotta give it up to the Rockets for hanging in there, with the losses of their 2 stars every year. However, to try and comeback at us and say that our Pistons “suck”, “they arent that good”… is ridiculous. The Pistons have won a championship, WITHOUT superstars…. we have gotten to the Finals twice… WITHOUT Superstars… and have gotten to the Eastern Confrence Finals in 6 consecutive years…. WITHOUT superstars. Name another team… besides the San Antonio Scrubs… that have had that kind of success? Need I remind you that the Pistons will be in the thick of the things again this year. Rockets havent even gotten out of the first round, and with the addition of Ron Artest, they should get at LEAST to the Conference Finals. ( it would be a disappointment if they dont ) It would be awesome to see a Pistons vs. Rockets in the finals… Would love to see T-Mac and Rip go at it. Would love to see Rasheed/McDyess/Kwame battle Yao and see ifw Tayshaun can contain Ron Artest. It would be a Finals to remember. However, how is the rockets going to contain Chauncey? Anyway, its cool to see the support the Rocket fans are giving Shaine. He is a Michigan guy ANYWAY! (he went to Detroit Country Day) Either way, its a win/win situation for me. Plus both of these guys work their butt’s off for their teams to win. HOWEVER, Jason Maxiell is still a little unknown. Lets have this poll in 2-3 more years and THAN judge who is more a “Floor Burn Champion”!
Representing Team Need4Sheed by the way… Peace and Love everyone. GO PISTONS!

I remember when Chuck Hayes got knocked out. He had like a 300 vote lead then his opponent(Turiaf) made this huge comeback.
Battier is the better hustle player. This is about hustle. He was 3rd in DPOY, he is easily the best perimeter defender in the league. The only thing else he brings is a decent three point shot (but nothing spectacular). But as I said its about hustle, its what gets Shane through.

We guys are living in the CET+1 timezone.
Maybe I shouldn’t have posted anything in the first place, but just one more thing: I might have misread, but I thought this was between two players, not two teams or two cities. Luckily those two cities are far apart, so no blood will be spilled because of this poll. You take this too seriously. Nobody will remember the result when the real action begins.
But hey, congratulations for SB.

Wow, props to whoever it was who decided to post using my name and make it look as if I was giving in. And I can assure all of you that cheating IS possible. Anyone with a basic understanding of how online voting works can see how simple cheating would be. Hardly anything on the internet is secure, especially an online poll.
September 4, 2008 » 8:32 PM »
Ben, you sound like an expert in online cheating.

Texas has 5 of the top 20 cities in America. There are more top 100 cities here than any other state. That includes states with bigger size and larger population. It has the highest commercial growth and ave median income is the highest versus cost of living. Sugarland down in Houston is in the top 60. Michigan has a couple good cities, namely Ann Arbor. I am living there now for law school and it is pretty nice. Been to Detroit too. I realize now why it didn’t crack the top 100, nor did any city located around it’s jurisdiction… they didn’t rank the ghettos.
September 4, 2008 » 9:38 PM »
Thanks for the geography lesson. Having the top cities must be why you vote so much.

Did someone really just mention Kwame Brown battling Yao?
The only thing Kwame Brown battles is the bench.

When I read this attempted slight at Battier…
“If Battier didn’t give 110% every game, he wouldn’t be in the league. He has no talent.”
I thought…yeah, that’s pretty much the definition of a Floor Burns champion. Thank you.
P.S. This is an individual deal, but lets keep it real – if the Rockets had the benefit of being in the Leastern Conference (minus Boston), this first round smack talk wouldn’t exist.
