Looking at Bob Hurley’s resume – more than 900 wins, 23 state championships, three USA Today National and induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame this summer – it’s clear he is worthy of being the focus of a documentary. But those stats only give a glimpse into what makes Hurley special.

This year’s version of the Los Angeles Lakers is about as unpredictable and erratic as any title contender in recent memory. It does not take an expert to see that their effort is fickle, their play unreliable, from quarter to quarter, much less from game to game.

The regular season contrasts between the conferences have carried over into the postseason. Even without looking into the numbers and simply watching the games, it’s clear where the competition lies.

As much as Lakers fans’ own self-importance might drive them to say that the Lakers lost on Thursday night in game three of their opening round series, they would be mistaken. It does a disservice to the tremendous determination, and execution, of the Thunder to say that the Lakers beat themselves.

If the Lakers hope to win this series, they had best take care of the Thunder quickly, and as decisively as possible. If this series returns to Los Angeles next Tuesday tied at two games a piece, the Lakers will be in a world of trouble.
