Last week I had the chance to chat with Andy Rautins at an event hosted by Basketball Canada about his goals for the upcoming World Championships qualifying tournament, what his veteran teammates are teaching him, his thoughts on being a veteran leader at Syracuse this season, what it’s like to have his dad as a coach and he shared his thoughts on the tough competition he’ll face in the upcoming tournament.

Bryan Colangelo Steals Amir Johnson

With one brilliant move, Colangelo was able to deal a guard that was going to rot on the bench, Roko Ukic, in order to fix the teams most glaring need: front court depth. Even if Amir Johnson only manages to match his 14.7 minutes per game that he averaged last season it will be a great improvement over what Ukic was looking at playing.

Larry Brown’s Failed Experiment With Raja Bell

When Raja Bell left college for the NBA he was pegged as a shooting guard, however during his rookie season he had a tough time hitting his shots. He only suited up for five games during the regular season and when he did get a chance to play he failed to leave a lasting impression while shooting an abysmal 28.6% from the field and failed to attempt a single free throw.

During a media scrum last season a story surfaced about Larry Brown attempting to mold Bell into a point guard during his rookie season.

Leon Powe Gets One More Shot At Redemption

The day the Boston Celtics announced they would be going in a different direction with power forward Leon Powe was a melancholy one. Powe, who was so integral in the 2008 NBA Finals as a hard-nosed rebounder and low post scorer, really showcased the heart and gritty toughness every team needs in order to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy come mid-June.

Last Wednesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers decided Powe was worth the league minimum and could eventually contribute in their pursuit of a first NBA Championship.

Oberto Finally Arrives

The last few Washington Wizards press conferences have taken place in the Acela Club of the Verizon Center, which is typically used for private parties. There are usually balloons, an impressive spread of food and beverages, and the players, coaches and front office personnel who show up are treated like royalty.

For the formal introduction of Fabricio Oberto the festivities were scaled back considerably.

Shelden Williams Signing Could Pay Huge Dividends

When Danny Ainge chose to sign Shelden Williams to a one-year contract, the risk seemed minimal. At most, the former Duke star who is the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots would strengthen an already impressive front-line. His role would be defined as a smart big man, coming off the bench to spell Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace should they need it.

Williams was a rebounding force during his four years at Duke. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in the country, for one of the most prestigious programs in all of basketball, he averaged three blocks and nine rebounds per game. His junior year, the third team All-American became the first to average a double-double under Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski with 15.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

With two of the most talented big men of the past 15 years wearing the same jersey and sharing the same paint, Williams just might provide the stellar defensive play he showcased on a game-by-game basis at the college level.
