Brandon Jennings is averaging just 18 minutes of playing time per night. Had he made a different decision, he could be playing at Connecticut, Kansas or USC, as each school offered him a scholarship. It appears that Jennings made a big mistake.

When a head coach is fired during the season the team is caught in a state of flux. You have a general manager and fans expecting changes, however due to the hectic traveling schedule of NBA teams the new head coach won’t necessarily get a lot of practice time with his new team to implement new sets. Hence the need to bring someone into the mix that already has some familiarity with the players and the organization.

We often hear from ownership and team presidents that everyone at the organization is accountable for its success or failure: players play, coaches coach, managers manage. That is a wonderful sentiment, but when it comes to the showdown, it does not hold. Teams get desperate for a quick fix and there needs to be a fall guy. It is a pity though that coaches, not team executives, must fall on their sword.

“I told Nick tonight..you’ve gotta help us in other ways, and I said remember, you aren’t going to score 30 every night in the NBA,” Ed Tapscott said with a smile creeping across his face. “These people are aware of you now, there are good coaches on the other side, and they’re going to make adjustments. When you score 33 on someone, they are going to adjust and take away something. Make a play, and that doesn’t always mean make a basket.”

As a Toronto Raptor fan, I know far too well how a season ripe with optimism can be darkened with a few untimely injuries and losing streaks. No, the Raptors aren’t the worst team in the NBA this year, not even close, but they are performing significantly below expectations.
