Fast Breaks

– Don Nelson knows more about basketball than I will ever know. Still, I find it odd that Marcus Williams can’t get on the court with the Warriors. It seemed like that was going to be the perfect role for him in Golden State.

Now? He is buried on the depth chart behind C.J. Watson and DeMarcus Nelson.

He has only played in four games this season and that was before the team acquired Jamal Crawford from the Knicks. Monta Ellis is due back to the team in about a month.

Throw in that Anthony Morrow has emerged (more on that in a second), it doesn’t look good for Williams.

– Anthony Morrow and Mike Taylor are two of the main reasons why I enjoy basketball so much. It shows that hard work and the right situation pays off.

– I don’t know if it was really a surprise that the Wizards fired Eddie Jordan, but it was a surprise to learn that he was the third longest tenured coach in the league behind only Jerry Sloan and Gregg Poppovich. Shows you how impatient most franchises are.

– The way the Nuggets are playing should worry some of the teams in the West. I caught a few minutes of their game against Chicago and Chauncey Billups makes that team so much more dangerous and poised. Allen Iverson is a great player, but Billups is a much better fit for that team.

They are 8-2 with their new point guard with wins over Boston, San Antonio and Dallas. Their two losses were at Cleveland and Los Angeles.

– The Nets and Raptors game last week was one of the best games I’ve ever watched. A bunch of clutch shots and a hostile crowd towards a star player. It was a playoff atmosphere in November.

– Portland worried me for a real long time. Maybe it was the whole ’sophomore slump’ or that teams wouldn’t take them lightly, but this team is for real. And they are going to only get better as Oden finds his legs.

– I consider myself to be a rather computer savvy person. But, I have no idea what this Twitter thing is all about. All I know is that if Shaquille O’Neal really called a fan then you can pretty much lock it up: there will never be another player like O’Neal in our lifetimes.

– Outside of the new look Nuggets, there are three words that should worry teams in the Western Conference:

Impending. Ginobli. Return.

– Is anyone second guessing Sacramento’s selection of Jason Thompson anymore?

– Charles and Dwyane, I wouldn’t eat those shrimp either.

– Gilbert Arenas is just saying what everyone else is thinking. If the earliest he can return to the floor is in January and the team is still struggling by then, shouldn’t he just rehab for the following year? I don’t see the harm in that logic.

This is a guy that is still the face of your franchise and he hasn’t played since April.

You’d like to see him come back and compete because that is what he is getting paid for. But, he is also there to win a championship. And although some might consider him leaving his teammates out in the cold, if the Wizards were to get a better draft pick and a completely healthy Arenas in 2008-2009, then what Wizards fan would be complaining?

– Since the NBA and ABA merged, there haven’t been two teams to win 65 games in a season. I’m not saying the Celtics and Lakers will or will not, but I think they have a legitimate chance.

Here are the top seasons (in terms of wins) along with the team who won the fewest amount of games that year for those of you who are interested if the Thunder will broach that level.

05-06 — Pistons 64 and Spurs 63; Knicks 23

97-98 — Bulls 62 and Sonics 61, Lakers 61, Jazz 62; Nuggets 11

96-97 — Bulls 69, Jazz 63 and Heat 61; Celtics 15 and Grizzlies 14

95-96 — Bulls 72, Sonics 64 and Magic 60; Grizzlies 15

85-86 — Celtics 67 and Lakers 62; Knicks 23

84-85 — Celtics 63 and Lakers 62; Warriors and Pacers 22

80-81 — Celtics 62, 76ers 62 and Bucks 60; Mavs 15

96-97 was the best year with 95-96 being a close second. Could the Cavs be another team this year that could win over 60 games? Could the Lakers win 70 and the Celtics put together another year of 66 wins? Are the Thunder better than 11 wins?

Something to keep in the back of your mind.
